The Cost of Commitment
Blessed are the Persecuted
The final Beatitude is perhaps the most difficult to hear: “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness”.
In many ways, this is the test of all the others. It is relatively easy to be gentle, merciful, or a peacemaker when it brings us praise. The true test of our character comes when living like Jesus brings opposition or rejection.
Why would this be a “blessing”? Because it confirms our identity. Notice that this final Beatitude ends with the exact same promise as the first: “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. This creates a circle. We begin by admitting we have nothing (poor in spirit) and we end by being willing to lose everything for the sake of the King. Persecution isn’t something to seek out, but when it comes because we are reflecting Christ, it is a sign that we truly belong to His Kingdom.
