An Undivided Heart
Blessed are the Pure in Heart
When Jesus spoke of the “pure in heart,” He was addressing a culture that was very concerned with outward religious rituals. But Jesus was looking deeper. Purity, in this sense, isn’t just about moral perfection; it’s about “singleness of heart”.
To be pure in heart means to have an undivided focus on God. It’s the opposite of being a “double-minded” person who tries to live for God on Sundays and for themselves the rest of the week. When our motives are cleared of “self” and focused on Him, our spiritual vision changes. Jesus says these people “shall see God”.
This doesn’t just mean seeing God in heaven one day. It means having the clarity to see God’s hand at work in our lives and in the world around us right now. Mercy softens our hearts, and that softness allows us to maintain a transparency before God that religious rules alone could never achieve.
